Thai Pongal 2019 was celebrated with the usual enthusiasm by the Tamil community in Watford at the Bushey Cricket Club, Bushey. The venue was adequate enough to accommodate everyone and the turn-out was exceptional given the short notice. For many, the fun began even before arriving at the venue, contemplating whether to drive thru the narrow road that leads into the cricket club. That adventure was followed by many more interesting moments unfolding during the 3 hour long celebrations.

Having being tipped off in the last minute, we couldn’t believe that a Pongal celebration was happening so close to our home, so I, with my family, rushed back from John Lewis just in time to witness the பொங்கலோ பொங்கல் moment. The singing of folk songs has left a lasting impression upon me and I am longing to be part of the next community event. Needless to say the food was delicious too.
